Consumers have been advised against using social media platforms to highlight unreasonable price increases and instead urged to report such cases directly to the authorities. This is to prevent any potential evidence from being destroyed before necessary action can be taken, according to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry trade, distribution, and business sector senior director Datuk Rohaizi Bahari.

Rohaizi emphasized that once a report is lodged with the ministry’s enforcement officials, immediate inspections and investigations will be carried out to address the issue. He cautioned that when information spreads widely on social media, there is a risk of evidence tampering or destruction.

Speaking to reporters at the official opening of the AEON supermarket in Setia Alam on March 18, Rohaizi stressed the importance of providing accurate and detailed complaints through the appropriate channels for swift resolution.

Addressing the controversy surrounding socks bearing the word “Allah” being sold at KK Mart convenience stores, Rohaizi clarified that items related to symbols and sensitive matters fall within the purview of the Home Ministry (KDN). He noted that the responsibility for ensuring that goods sold on their premises comply with the law lies with the business owners.

The sale of products containing sensitive symbols or references should be handled with caution, as such items may have legal implications and require proper scrutiny by the authorities. Rohaizi underscored the importance of maintaining compliance with regulations to avoid any potential conflicts or controversies.

It is crucial for businesses to exercise discretion in their sales practices and take into account the legal implications of offering certain products to consumers. By adhering to regulations and guidelines set forth by the relevant authorities, businesses can mitigate risks and uphold standards of ethical conduct in their operations.

Rohaizi reiterated the need for cooperation between consumers and authorities in addressing issues related to price hikes and sensitive items sold in retail outlets. By following proper reporting procedures and collaborating with enforcement agencies, consumers can contribute to maintaining a transparent and fair marketplace for all.

Ultimately, the responsibility lies with both businesses and consumers to uphold ethical standards and comply with regulations to prevent potential legal complications and ensure a harmonious relationship between retailers and buyers.
