The leader of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) believes that Sabah should have control over its education system, as the Education Ministry has not effectively addressed the state’s educational challenges.

Yee Tsai Yiew, Api-Api PBS information chief, made this statement following a High Court ruling in Kota Belud, where three former SMK Taun Gusi students successfully sued their ex-English teacher and four others for absenteeism.

Yee sees this ruling as a significant move towards accountability in the education system and the protection of students’ rights.

She emphasizes the need for the ministry to intervene more seriously and systematically to improve the educational structure in Sabah and calls for prompt action following the court decision.

Yee stresses the importance of creating an environment where all students have access to quality education and are safeguarded against teacher negligence or absence.

Referring to the High Court ruling, she states, “This highlights the significance of providing quality education and upholding teachers’ responsibility.”

Yee believes the ruling also sends a strong message that teachers must be present and committed to their profession, as their absence can greatly impact students’ academic progress and overall well-being.

She further asserts that the ministry should take full responsibility for addressing similar issues promptly by implementing a policy that encourages students to report grievances.

Yee adds, “The ministry plays a crucial role in shaping our nation’s future through effective educational policies.”

If the ministry fails to effectively address the diverse educational needs of the nation, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak, Yee suggests returning education autonomy to the states. She believes that Sabah and Sarawak governments can establish a more localized and responsive education system.

This decentralization would empower state education departments to collaborate closely with schools, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders in resolving grassroots challenges, ensuring a more efficient and effective educational framework.
