A retired soldier, aged 56, lost his life in a tragic accident that occurred on New Year’s Day when he was unable to maintain control of his car and collided with the road shoulder along the Kota-Kinabalu–Papar road. The incident took place around 7.50pm in the Putatan area.
The former army officer died at the scene, and it was reported that a co-passenger in the front seat did not sustain any injuries.
According to Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton, initial investigations suggested that the victim was driving when he lost control of the vehicle and swerved off the road before crashing. He stated this in a press release on Tuesday (Jan 2).
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been sent to the Forensic Department of Hospital Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for post-mortem.
The case is currently under investigation, falling under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
Supt Sammy has urged any witnesses to the accident to come forward and provide information to aid in the police investigation.
