KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur can be brought back under the jurisdiction of Selangor to create a “mega metropolis,” according to a proposal by Lee Chean Chung.
Lee (PH-Petaling Jaya) suggested that this move would enhance urban development and improve the quality of life in the Klang Valley.
“I propose the establishment of a mega metropolis by reintegrating Kuala Lumpur into Selangor,” he stated.
“This would facilitate development and enable better planning,” he said during his debate on the 12th Malaysia Plan mid-term review in Parliament on Wednesday (Sept 13).
The reunification of the Federal territory with the state could result in an expansion of available land, which could then be utilized for the construction of more affordable housing units.
“While this may be seen as a radical idea, we must not forget that Kuala Lumpur was once the capital of Selangor,” Lee added.
Furthermore, he stated that this amalgamation would transform Selangor into a more dynamic economic powerhouse that could compete with other megacities in the region.
“Consider the economic synergy that can be achieved by combining Kuala Lumpur and Selangor,” he remarked, noting that Putrajaya could remain as the administrative center for the country.
Kuala Lumpur was granted city status on February 1, 1972, and then became a Federal territory a year later on February 1, 1974.
Currently, the city, which comprises 11 parliamentary constituencies, falls under the administration of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Lee stated that the reunification of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor would also grant residents the ability to vote again during the state election.
He added that residents would also benefit from the welfare programs and incentives offered by the state government of Selangor, including 40 other incentives.
