SEPANG: Azrennizam Ibrahim, one of the guardians of giant panda cubs Yi Yi and Sheng Yi, was deeply affected by their departure for China. As the pandas were being unloaded at the animal hotel in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo Complex, Azrennizam called out their names and gently patted their cages to keep them calm. Tears welled up in his eyes as he stroked the panda cage, expressing his hope that their new guardians will take good care of them. He described the level of care they received as being “like a full tank of oil” and recounted how he watched over and nurtured the pandas, including their parents, which he referred to as an unforgettable experience.
Upon arrival at the animal hotel, Yi Yi and Sheng Yi were placed in a room together for a period of rest. They had traveled for about half an hour from Zoo Negara and were given nourishment upon arrival. Azrennizam spoke fondly of the mischievous pandas, particularly Sheng Yi, and emphasized that the experience of caring for them was one of the most valuable in his life. He expressed his desire to meet the panda pair again, even though it may seem unlikely.
The two giant panda cubs, born to the panda couple Fu Wa and Feng Yi (renamed Xing Xing and Liang Liang), will be sent back to China on Tuesday, August 29th. Nuan Nuan, the eldest of the siblings, was already returned to China in 2017. The panda parents were loaned to the Malaysian government for a period of 10 years starting in 2014, as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China. – Bernama
