Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reassured concerned parents that the government is addressing the rights of children born abroad. He announced that the Cabinet has agreed to present an amendment to Article 14(1)(b) of the Federal Constitution regarding the citizenship rights of children born abroad to Parliament this month.
During a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Berlin on Tuesday (March 12), Anwar informed attendees to stay informed about the developments back home, as the issue is being actively addressed. He emphasized that the amendment will put an end to the ongoing concerns.
Anwar clarified that the current definition of a parent in the Constitution only refers to a father, but the upcoming amendment will broaden it to include both parents. This amendment aims to be more inclusive by replacing the word ‘father’ with ‘parents’ or ‘mother’ or ‘father’.
Addressing concerns raised by a Global Bersih representative about difficulties faced by Malaysians in voting during the past two general elections, Anwar stated that he has directed the Election Commission (EC) to investigate the matter. He highlighted the need to simplify the voting process, such as increasing voting centers and considering locations like Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) offices.
Furthermore, Anwar urged the EC to explore the possibility of implementing automatic voter registrations for Malaysians living abroad, similar to the system in place within the country. He emphasized the importance of improving access to voting for all eligible citizens.
Anwar also mentioned the high demand for students graduating from Germany in Malaysia, particularly among German companies operating in the country. He highlighted the skills and talents of these individuals, showcasing the positive impact of international education and experience.
Overall, Anwar’s visit to Germany has been productive in addressing various issues affecting Malaysians both at home and abroad. The upcoming constitutional amendment regarding citizenship rights for children born abroad and efforts to streamline the voting process demonstrate the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its citizens.
As discussions continue and actions are taken, Anwar remains focused on promoting inclusivity, efficiency, and opportunities for all Malaysians, regardless of their location or background. The engagement with the Malaysian diaspora in Berlin reflects the government’s efforts to engage with and listen to the concerns of citizens living overseas.
