KANOWIT: According to National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, the recent riot that took place in Kanowit is not related to racial issues. He stated, “The riot is a criminal case and does not concern racial issues,” during the closing ceremony of the Kanowit Festival on Sunday (Sept 24).

Datuk Aaron also reassured the public that Kanowit is still a safe place, emphasizing that the festival’s attendance is evidence of this safety. He said, “If it is not safe, nobody will come (to the festival). Today, everywhere is crowded.”

The incident at the Kanowit district office on September 12 involved a group causing a disturbance, resulting in charges being filed against a few individuals. Some members of the group broke into the district office and assaulted others present. As a result, two individuals were injured, and their vehicles were damaged, according to Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azam Ahmad Sapri.

He further stated that investigations are ongoing, and the case is being handled under Section 148 of the Penal Code.
