KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s decision to increase the minimum price of rice from RM1,200 to RM1,300 per metric ton has motivated local rice producers in Perak, Kelantan, and Kedah to enhance their yields.

Shaiful Shahrin Ahmad Pauzi, a 39-year-old rice farmer in Perak, expressed his support for the price increase, stating that it would help offset the rising costs of seeds and other agricultural inputs. He mentioned that even with the current price of RM53 per sack compared to the previous price of RM35, they can still continue farming. He also added, “We welcome the announced rise in floor price, along with the rice subsidy scheme of RM500 per metric ton. If the floor price could be increased to RM1,500, rice farmers would be more secure,”

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, announced the increase in the rice floor price during the presentation of the Budget 2024, acknowledging the difficulties faced by farmers.

Azmi Ishak, the chairman of the Peringat Farmers’ Association in Kelantan, expressed his delight with the government’s decision and mentioned that the increase would help cover the cost of production for the 720 rice farmers in his association. He stated, “It shows that the government is doing its duty to raise the income of local rice producers.”

Mohd Fadli Mohd Noor, the chief of the Bechah Mulong Bendang Unit, shared similar sentiments and said that the establishment of the floor price would enable farmers to plan their targets for increasing rice production and earning more. He also highlighted that the price increase would aid in producing better quality yields.

In Kedah, Ahmad Bakar, a 71-year-old rice farmer with 30 years of experience in Alor Setar, expressed his belief that the increase in floor price would be beneficial for many farmers in the rice-producing state. Although he acknowledged that the increase may not be substantial, he still regarded it as helpful.

Overall, the rise in the floor price for rice has been met with positive responses from rice farmers in Perak, Kelantan, and Kedah. They view the increase as a means to cope with rising costs and enhance their income. The government’s decision demonstrates its support for local rice producers and their efforts to increase production.
