The Federal Government has allocated approximately RM1.9mil for the reconstruction of a building at SK Tok Kandu here, which was destroyed in a fire on Sept 22.
According to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Public Works Department has prepared an initial report on the damaged structure to expedite the approval of an initial fund for clean-up work at the affected site.
The report includes measures such as the installation of barriers or walls for the safety of the pupils.
Anwar Ibrahim stated, “Once this is done within a week or two, we will proceed with a limited tendering process. The (exact) fund needed has not been calculated yet, but it’s around RM1.9mil. If possible, if the report is ready by next week, we will proceed immediately.”
The Prime Minister assured that the reconstruction work would not disrupt the students’ learning process and visited the school site with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid, state agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol, and Seberang Jaya assemblyman Izhar Shah Arif Shah.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated that it would take two weeks to assess the damage caused by the fire, which affected five classrooms on the third floor of the building.
Out of the five classrooms, three were completely destroyed, including a computer room, while the remaining two were approximately 40% burnt.
Fortunately, there were no teachers or students present at the time of the fire.
