KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has revealed that a total of RM125.13mil has been distributed to vernacular and government-assisted schools nationwide as of Sept 30 for maintenance works. Minister Fadhlina Sidek mentioned that the allocations were given to various types of schools, including Chinese and Tamil vernacular primary schools, religious schools, and missionary schools.
A breakdown of the allocation shows that RM6.6mil was earmarked for maintenance works in Chinese vernacular primary schools, while a further RM47.7mil was set aside for government-assisted Chinese vernacular primary schools. In addition, RM4.28mil was distributed to Tamil vernacular primary schools and RM19.47mil was allocated for government-assisted Tamil vernacular primary schools.
Religious schools received RM28.68mil for maintenance works, while RM18.4mil was allocated for missionary schools. Fadhlina made this statement in response to a question by Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong regarding the amount and breakdown of allocations distributed to Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools, government-assisted religious schools, and missionary schools for repair purposes.
Furthermore, the ministry also distributed additional allocations for minor upgrade and maintenance works at learning institutions this year. Some RM29.19mil was allocated to Chinese vernacular primary schools and RM11.48mil for Tamil vernacular primary schools nationwide for toilet maintenance, among others.
Fadhlina emphasized that schools can apply for additional allocations, as the distribution of the funds is based on the priority list presented and recommended by state Education Departments and district Education offices to the ministry. “We will consider any applications for further allocations from time to time, if needed, to ensure education facilities are comfortable and safe,” she added.
