Additional funding of RM30mil will be allocated for the Jeli-Gerik East-West Highway road upgrade, according to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister announced that the Federal Government will also discuss the Works Ministry’s request for the highway upgrade in the upcoming budget. Anwar shared his experience of using the highway from Kota Bharu, Kelantan to Penang at night, highlighting the lack of lights on the road and the need to stop for elephants crossing. Anwar made these remarks during his speech at the launch of the Works Ministry’s MYJalan campaign at Jeti Awam Pulau Banding on Saturday (Aug 24).
In June, the Works Ministry announced that RM45.676mil had already been allocated for the East-West highway upgrade. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated during a press conference that the new allocation will allow for further upgrades on the highway, including possible reconstructions of certain sections. Linggi also mentioned the potential addition of street lamps to address the lack of lighting.
