DRAIN upgrades for the commercial area in Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya, have been completed under the state’s Projek Selangor Penyayang (PSP).
The project, which cost RM49,000, repaired a 190m stretch of drains between two shop blocks on Jalan 20/16A in Section 20.
Work on the drain upgrades began on July 17 and were supposed to be completed by Dec 4 but wrapped up early last week.
Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei said the fourth project under PSP also saw new drain gratings installed and roads along the drains resurfaced to ensure pedestrian safety.
“We chose this particular area because we noticed the drains were damaged,” she said at a press conference in Taman Paramount.
Lim said grease and rubbish were being dumped into the drains, which caused these channels to become clogged and stained.
“We found that some eateries and mechanic shops do not use grease traps.
“Some also throw food waste or soot directly into the drains.
“So we have a huge amount of build-up clogging the drains,” she added.
Lim urged the public not to litter and advised businesses to use grease traps to avoid damaging drains.
“If this issue persists, we should carry out enforcement right away,” she said.
She added that there were at least 200 businesses in the area that were around 30 years old.
Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Zone 19 councillor Nalina Nair said public littering was still an issue that needed to be addressed.
“Please do not throw rubbish into drains because if they get clogged, it affects everyone.
“There are many rubbish bins around, and often, you will find a bin that is empty but rubbish has been thrown beside it instead.
“It is our civic duty to make sure that we do not litter or throw rubbish everywhere,” she added.
