The Selangor government has allocated RM500,000 to repair the roofs of flats in Taman Ampang Hilir, which were damaged in a thunderstorm last week.
Izham Hashim, the state infrastructure development committee chairman, stated that the repair works are progressing smoothly and are expected to be completed within several weeks.
“The state, through the Welfare Department (JKM) and National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), is providing temporary shelter to the affected residents,” said Izham, who is also the Pandan Indah assemblyman.
During his visit to the flats, Izham spoke to the media alongside Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) President Dr Ani Ahmad.
Zone 14 councillor Roasiah Ramli added that the repairs were initially scheduled to be completed in eight weeks, but the timeline may be affected by weather conditions.
“If there is no rain, the roof repairs can be completed sooner. However, heavy rain could extend the duration,” explained Roasiah Ramli.
Roasiah Ramli mentioned that the repair works include inspecting and fixing ceilings and wiring in the units.
According to MPAJ, a total of 18 units at the scheme in Jalan Hilir 4 were damaged during the thunderstorm on August 27.
In response to the incident, eight families consisting of 29 individuals were relocated by JKM to a temporary shelter at Dewan Persatuan Penduduk Flat Ampang Hilir.
Currently, six families are still accommodated in the shelter and receiving assistance from JKM.
“MPAJ provided three tents and chairs for the affected families. Additionally, six MPAJ personnel were involved in the storm clean-up,” Roasiah Ramli shared.
Assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department mentioned that after the thunderstorm, the road leading to the housing area was temporarily blocked.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
