In Melaka, the spirit of giving ahead of the Ramadan month has begun early this year, with RM6.5 million of tithe (zakat) being distributed to 10,420 eligible recipients in multiple stages. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced that the financial assistance has been increased to RM400 per household, with an additional RM100 allocated to each hardcore poor individual to purchase essential food items during the Holy Month.
Ab Rauf Yusoh emphasized that the increased financial aid is intended to alleviate the burden of the rising cost of living. He made this announcement after personally distributing aid to 227 recipients at Tanjung Bidara in Melaka on Saturday (March 2). The distribution aims to ensure early preparations for the upcoming Ramadan celebrations among the recipients.
The assistance will benefit 8,200 individuals from the poor category, 220 hardcore poor individuals, and 2,000 converts (mualaf) in Melaka. Ab Rauf highlighted that the state’s tithe collections saw an increase to RM128.3 million in 2023, showing a growth of RM10 million compared to RM118.3 million in the previous year.
Ab Rauf Yusoh reiterated that the assistance distributed is solely designated for the purchase of food items to support the recipients’ well-being during the Ramadan period.
