Yew Wei Liang, a former information technology worker, has been given a 16-year prison sentence by the High Court in Shah Alam for causing the death of bank manager Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Shakir during a road rage incident on the North-South Expressway (NSE) bound for Kuala Lumpur-Seremban four years ago.

On Thursday (Dec 7), Judge Julia Ibrahim ordered that Yew Wei Liang’s sentence should commence from the day he was apprehended, which was August 10, 2019.

When announcing her decision, Judge Julia emphasized that the court had considered mitigating factors such as Yew’s background, cooperation during the investigation, and the impact statement from the victim’s family. However, she also stressed the significance of public interest and the need to impose a deterrent sentence to serve as a warning to others. She stated that the incident, which stemmed from road rage and was exacerbated by the use of illegal substances, had led to serious consequences.

She further mentioned, “The court also weighed the impact statement from the victim’s family and this is indeed a great tragedy that has befallen and impacted all parties, either directly or indirectly.”

This ruling was made based on the report by Bernama.
