KUCHING: The Sarawak Delta’s roadmap for nomination as a UNESCO Global Geopark will be presented to the National Geopark Committee in October. Sarawak Forestry director Datuk Hamden Mohammad stated that the roadmap, known as “Aspiring Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark,” was discussed during a two-day inter-agency workshop that began today. Global and national geopark experts, including Global Geoparks Network Association vice president Prof Emeritus Datuk Ibrahim Komoo, participated in the workshop to develop a detailed roadmap for preparing the Aspiring Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark.
In addition to Prof Emeritus Datuk Ibrahim Komoo, the workshop involved National Geopark Technical Committee chairman Prof Dr Che Aziz Ali, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) lecturer Associate Prof Dr Tanot Unjah, and Kelantan Mineral and Geoscience Department deputy director Dr Dana Badang. According to Hamden, the workshop aims to create a geopark planning framework, which will include various components such as goals, vision, objectives, natural resource conservation plans, public education plans, tourism activities, and cultural and historical preservation.
The Sarawak Delta was officially recognized as the sixth national geopark during the National Geopark Committee meeting on June 20 last year. The Sarawak Delta National Geopark covers an area of 3,112 sq km, and it boasts 28 geosites, 12 biosites, and 14 cultural geosites.
