KUALA LUMPUR: The Madani administration may not do well in the next general election if it goes ahead with targeted RON95 petrol subsidies, cautions a government backbencher.

Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) also said the rich do not use petrol-fuelled vehicles but use electric vehicles instead.

“I fully supported the diesel subsidy rationalisation. I do love my party (PKR) and hope we can win the next election. But if we go through with RON95 (subsidy rationalisation), I’m worried that we will just last one term,” he said when debating the Supply Bill 2025 on Thursday (Oct 24).

He also questioned how the threshold for the T15 income category is determined.

“A husband may have a RM6,000 salary, his wife RM5,000 and their child RM4,000.

“When you add it all up, they (the household) falls into the T15 category with a more than RM15,000 accumulative salary and denied access to subsidised government services,” he said.

Under Budget 2025, those under the T15 group are no longer eligible for health, education and fuel subsidies.

The Statistics Department in 2022 defined the T15 group as those with a household income of at least RM13,295.
