MELAKA: SMK Munshi Abdullah in Batu Berendam here suffered extensive damage on Saturday (Oct 28) due to strong winds. The school’s principal, Ramli Abdullah, reported that eight classrooms and the administration block were badly affected by the winds. In addition, two teachers’ rooms were also damaged. The incident occurred at approximately 2.30pm.
Ramli stated, “The affected classes were originally scheduled to be used for the SPM trial examination on Monday (Oct 30). We will seek advice from the Melaka Education Department regarding the possibility of postponing the trial examination or arranging alternative classrooms.”
Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries. Ramli mentioned that there were 10 teachers and a group of Form Six students present at the school when the strong winds struck.
Block C was the most severely affected area within the school premises, according to Ramli. However, he reassured that the nearby hostel remained unaffected by the incident.
Meanwhile, Kerk Chee Yee, the Ayer Keroh assemblyman, has requested various departments, including the state Public Works Department, to expedite the repair works at the school.
The strong winds also caused trees at Taman Merdeka to be uprooted and fall on cars. The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department successfully rescued a family of four who were trapped in their car after a tree fell on it.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported as a result of the incident.
