KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore has reached 83% completion as of July this year, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said the construction of the RTS Link project is on track to start operations on Jan 1, 2027, as scheduled.
“The construction work on the RTS Link rail infrastructure has reached 83% physical completion with access for the RTS Link operator, RTS Operations Systems Sdn Bhd (RTSO), to install systems expected by the end of this year.
“The completion of the rail infrastructure will also enable RTSO to commence system installation work, which includes trackwork, rolling stock, signalling systems, as well as power supply and distribution,” he said in a press conference after witnessing the agreement signing between MRT Corporation and Coronade Properties here on Thursday (Aug 20).
Loke said the construction of the Immigration, Customs, and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in Bukit Chagar is also in progress as scheduled.
“The building’s substructure has been completed, and the construction of the superstructure is actively underway.
“The access for the agencies that will operate at the CIQ to install equipment and systems is expected to begin in Aug 2025,” he added.
Loke also said the ministry is currently reviewing a traffic dispersal plan for the Iskandar Malaysia region in collaboration with local authorities. This initiative will further enhance infrastructure development around Johor Bahru and improve overall traffic conditions across the city and its surrounding areas.
He said the effort is not only aimed at managing the high influx of visitors but also at fostering economic growth and the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
“The initiative includes the enhancement of land public transport, enabling direct connectivity to the CIQ Complex in Bukit Chagar and the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD).
“The road access for vehicles entering the CIQ Complex includes Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Jalan Tebrau, and routes from Jalan Jim Quee as well as Jalan Tunku Azizah,” he said.
To address this issue, Loke said the government is prioritising investments exceeding RM200mil in public transport infrastructure around Bukit Chagar, which will not only meet current demand but also accommodate future development.
With system installation expected to begin by the end of the year, MRT Corp is constructing a new multi-story Park ‘N Ride facility at Bukit Chagar.
This facility will offer 1,500 parking spaces for RTS Link passengers, complementing the additional 781 parking bays by Coronade Properties at Coronation Square, which is located just 400 meters from Bukit Chagar Station.
These parking spaces will be dedicated to RTS Link commuters, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility for those using the cross-border service between Johor Bahru and Singapore when operations commence at the end of 2026.
Earlier at the event, Loke witnessed the sales and purchase agreement signed between MRT Corp through its subsidiary, Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd (MRTS) with Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd (CPSB) for the acquisition of 781 parking bays at Coronation Square.
