Wales’ players are aware of the high stakes as they prepare to face England in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match at Twickenham on Saturday. Warren Gatland, the coach, admits to uncertainty surrounding his midfield and back three.
The upcoming match presents an opportunity for a new group of Welsh players to impress after their 20-9 victory over England in Cardiff last weekend. Gatland has made 15 changes to the starting lineup, stating that World Cup squad spots are still up for grabs. While England coach Steve Borthwick will announce his 33-player squad on Monday, Gatland is still considering his options.
“For me, it is a good position to be in, knowing that the team has to perform. There is a lot at stake, and the players are well aware of that. As a result, we have mixed up the teams,” Gatland told reporters on Thursday.
One player hoping to make a strong impression is centre Joe Roberts, who will be making his debut in one of the positions that Gatland is uncertain about.
“I have been impressed with him for a while, with his footwork and carrying,” the coach said. “He is left-footed, which provides a point of difference in terms of exit strategy and how you want to manipulate teams.
“I am interested to see how he performs alongside Nick Tompkins. Hopefully, debutant Keiron Williams will get a run in the second half off the bench.
“We have a lot of uncertainty about the combinations in the midfield and the composition of the back three. There are opportunities for players to showcase their abilities and stake their claim.”
Gatland believes that England will change their strategy at Twickenham and adopt a more kicking-oriented game plan, following their inability to break through the Welsh defense last weekend with ball in hand.
“We tried to change a few things with our kicking strategy, based on what they had posted online about wanting to win the kicking battle. We expect them to kick a lot more than last week,” he said.
Gatland also provided updates on several injured players as they prepare to host the world champions, South Africa, on August 19.
“Taulupe Faletau won’t be available next week, but we are confident he will be available for future matches. Wing Alex Cuthbert should be fit for next week, and Johnny Williams has the potential to be fit for next weekend.
“Flyhalf Gareth Anscombe won’t be fit, but it does not rule him out of the World Cup,” Gatland added.
