Sabah aims to be sports lovers’ top destination

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Joniston Bangkuai stated that Sabah is aiming to host more international sporting events, such as the Malaysia Borneo Football Cup, in order to develop the sports tourism sector. he expressed his excitement about embracing such a prestigious international sports tournament and mentioned that it aligns perfectly with their vision of promoting sports tourism and attracting families looking for a unique blend of sports education and leisure. These statements were made during the welcome dinner held for the tournament participants.

Notable attendees at the event included Borneo Cup tournament director Scott Ollerenshow, Sabah FC CEO Marzuki Nasir, and Australian football personalities Andrew Paschalidis and Alan Davidson. Bangkuai, who serves as Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister and Sabah Tourism Board chairman, emphasized that the state acknowledges the potential of the Borneo Football Cup in attracting aspiring footballers and their families to Sabah. He expressed his delight at seeing the tournament back on the annual calendar after the hiatus caused by the pandemic. He also mentioned that teams from Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan have participated in previous years, and they eagerly anticipate their return.

Additionally, Bangkuai expressed full support for Ollerenshow’s announcement regarding the organization of a Future Girl Football Tournament, offering unwavering support from the board.
