KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Social Welfare Services Department has launched a pilot programme that enables young individuals with disabilities (OKU) to learn industrial car washing skills. Jais Asri, the director of the department, stated that the training programme is now being offered as an elective course for OKU students at the Kimanis Training and Rehabilitation Complex. The programme was implemented based on a proposal made by KK Auto Detailer Sdn Bhd, the department’s strategic partner, to enhance the skill levels of OKU students at the complex. According to Jais, this initiative was well received and has been included in the learning syllabus to enhance the students’ skillset upon completion of their training.
Jais emphasized that the skills acquired by these students will not only assist them in the working world but also make them more employable. He expressed his appreciation for KK Auto Detailer in their efforts to prepare disabled students for the workforce. Jais expressed his hope that this partnership will continue and expand in scope, furthering similar programmes through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the future. He also revealed plans to extend the initiative to other districts, including Sandakan and Tawau. Additionally, Jais mentioned the department’s plans for a personal care programme in the beauty and wellness sector, specifically focusing on manicures and reflexology.
Jais welcomed potential partnerships with other companies or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to conduct programmes aimed at improving the living standards of people with disabilities. He stressed the importance of collaboration among all parties to support the OKU community. Jais urged parents to send their children with disabilities to the department for appropriate training, as they are considered assets for the nation’s development.
Amelson Ng Jing Sheng, the manager of KK Auto Detailer, explained that the company initiated this programme out of concern for the welfare of OKU students after they complete their training. He mentioned that the car washing course imparts knowledge and skills applicable in the working world. Ng’s staff ensures that the students learn the correct and effective methods of washing vehicles without causing any damage. Ng also hinted at the possibility of offering employment opportunities to students who successfully complete the course, mentioning that the training sessions proceeded smoothly as the students were able to comprehend the techniques being taught.
Mohd Rabbani Rosdi Jeminis, a 21-year-old student, expressed his decision to enroll in the elective course, perceiving it as an excellent opportunity to secure employment in the future. Mohd Rabbani, who specialized in computer skills at the centre, shared that he quickly grasped the technique of using a machine to wash a car within four days of the course.
