KOTA KINABALU: The completion of development plans for Sabah, including the Pan Borneo Highway project, requires the continued commitment of the Federal Government, according to State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He stated that during the recent Kembara Kenali Borneo expedition from Sabah to Sarawak, led by the King, it became apparent that there are concerns on the ground regarding infrastructure problems. “These problems have been voiced to the King… and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has (also heard) these complaints,” he said after the National Month celebrations closing ceremony at Putatan on Thursday (Sept 21).
Shahelmey pointed out that Phase One of the Pan Borneo project remains incomplete, as the construction work on the sections from Tawau to Kinabatangan and Telupid to Ranau has not yet commenced. “We need the commitment from (Putrajaya) to see that these projects not only start but are completed,” emphasized Shahelmey, who also serves as Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III. He added that Anwar had pledged to initiate work on these two road sections by the end of the year.
Shahelmey conveyed that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had taken note of the various issues faced by the people of Sabah, such as roads, water, and electricity supply. When asked about his wish list for Budget 2024, Shahelmey expressed his hope for more efficient distribution of allocations for the state and the resolution of pressing infrastructure matters.
