KOTA KINABALU: According to Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, the resumption of AirAsia direct flights from Jakarta to Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday (Feb 6) after 10 years is set to have a positive impact on tourism. The state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said the return of the route marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance regional connectivity.
Bangkuai further specified, “The introduction of the Kota Kinabalu to Jakarta route is poised to have an impact on the tourism sector as well as fostering cultural exchanges and boosting economic activities. It is anticipated that there will be increased tourist arrivals, opening up new opportunities for local businesses,” he stated in a press conference after receiving the passengers arriving on the inaugural flight on Tuesday evening.

Bangkuai, who serves as the Sabah Tourism Board chairman as well, said that discussions with the airline were ongoing to promote the state as a premier tourism destination. He added, “This is important for us given Sabah’s position as the second-largest hub for AirAsia in Malaysia. AirAsia is set to introduce additional direct flights this year, including routes to Denpasar and Manado.”

Bangkuai expressed his hopes that the state would seize the opportunity to capitalize on AirAsia’s established connectivity within Asean. AirAsia will operate three return flights a week on the Jakarta-Kota Kinabalu route, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
