KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040) will address the state’s immediate power needs while also building resilience for the future of the energy industry, according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor (pic).

At the launch of the roadmap at Menara Kinabalu, Hajiji emphasized that the master plan will ensure energy security for Sabah.

“The state government is fully committed to implementing the SE-RAMP 2040 in a systematic and effective manner,” he added.

SE-RAMP 2040 is a 17-year energy roadmap aimed at meeting Sabah’s immediate power needs by 2030, as it progresses toward becoming a carbon-neutral state.

The master plan outlines the state’s future direction and strategic initiatives, including the state government taking over regulatory powers for electricity supply and renewable energy from the Federal Government starting in January next year.

The roadmap also facilitates the development of renewable energy to support the nation’s carbon-neutral goals by 2050.

As part of the master plan, the Sabah Energy Council will be established, chaired by the Chief Minister, to oversee, support, and provide guidance on the implementation of short, medium, and long-term initiatives.

One of the main objectives of SE-RAMP 2040 is to ensure a reliable power supply that is accessible and affordable for all.

This aligns with the state government’s commitment to providing power to the people and ensuring sustainability for the future of Sabah.

“It also complements the National Energy Policy launched last year and the National Energy Transition Roadmap 2050 (NETR) launched in August this year,” added Hajiji.

Hajiji stated that the SE-RAMP 2040, developed by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), includes various strategies and initiatives to address the energy “trilemma” of ensuring energy security, affordability, and environmental sustainability.

“We are aware that the power supply issue in Sabah has been a longstanding problem for the people.

“This plan will undoubtedly help us increase electricity supply for industrial needs, and I want ECoS to fulfill its mandate to the highest extent for the benefit of the people and the state,” he said.

The Chief Minister also announced that the state government has already attracted several high-impact investors, such as copper coil manufacturer SK Nexilis, solar glass manufacturer Kibing, Linaco coconut integrated processing mill, and Esteel’s green steel project.

ECoS CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid explained that SE-RAMP 2040 has adopted 16 strategies to address the energy trilemma.

These strategies include ensuring a sufficient generation reserve margin, a diversified fuel mix, and exploring new energy sources and technologies for long-term energy security.
