The Sabah government has been advised to ensure that water supplies are not disrupted due to a forecasted reduction in rainfall during the upcoming north-east monsoon season. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, stated that a 20% decrease in rainfall is expected during this season, which will run from November 2023 to March 2024. As a result, the state government should be prepared for potential disruptions to the water supply.
Armizan emphasized that the reduction in rainfall could affect the availability of raw water in reservoirs and rivers that serve as sources for water treatment plants. To address this concern, he urged the state government to obtain a detailed report from METMalaysia to identify areas that will likely be significantly affected by the drought conditions. This information will be crucial in formulating early plans to prevent water supply disruptions in those areas.
METMalaysia unveiled the weather forecast for the northeast monsoon during the 2nd Disaster Management Committee Meeting held on October 17. While most states can expect rain and a risk of flooding, Sabah will experience a decrease in rainfall. However, some areas in Sabah may still experience rain and thunderstorms.
Despite the forthcoming decrease in rainfall, Armizan emphasized that all related agencies, including response teams and assets like Temporary Evacuation Centres, should remain on high alert. It is important to be prepared for any eventuality.
