KOTA KINABALU: Despite a recent dissolution announcement, Muafakat Nasional president Tan Sri Annuar Musa confirmed that its Sabah chapter remains intact.

Disclosing that no one has the authority to dissolve the non-governmental organisation, Annuar said Sabah Muafakat Nasional will continue to function under the supervision of its remaining committee members.

“A few of the committee members, in fact, two deputy chairmen and a few vices, had expressed their interest to continue. Some may have announced their departure and we respect their decision, but some remained with us,” he told reporters after chairing the Sabah PAS meeting here on Saturday (Aug 31).

Annuar added that he would be sitting down with the remaining loyalists later on Saturday, adding: “I am open-minded and ready to meet with the committee. We hope to learn more at the meeting.”

He was responding to Sabah Muafakat Nasional chairman Jismit Japong’s recent announcement of dissolving the state chapter, claiming to have the support of its 32 committee members.

Jismit claimed that they felt unappreciated and had been moving solo without financial assistance from the central committee.

Annuar, however, noted that Muafakat Nasional was an NGO and not a political party.

“If some people are making decisions for personal gain, it is their choice because this is a voluntary body, not a political party,” he stressed.

Noting that Jismit had also stated of losing confidence in Annuar, the latter explained that the former had suggested turning the NGO into a political platform.

“Just two weeks back, Sabah Muafakat Nasional chairman sent me minutes from a meeting proposing to turn the NGO to become Muafakat Nasional Party. I am already a PAS member, so it is unlikely to set up a new political party.

“He had strong confidence in me then, but two weeks later, he lost confidence. So I am intrigued with the sudden change of trust.

“I also read that he is interested in being the chief minister. I thank him for relinquishing his position in Muafakat Nasional so that this NGO can operate according to its principles,” he said.

Annuar expressed that the situation had put him on a spot, adding: “Even before the elections, the Sabah MN chairman has declared his intention to become the chief minister of Sabah. In PAS, we haven’t even declared who we want as chief minister. So, I’m caught in the middle.”

He disclosed that those who wish to engage in politics should join a political party.

“All that matters is that Muafakat Nasional continues its NGO services, focussing on unity, love and respect,” said Annuar.
