Sabah ramping up digitalisation efforts to maximise digital economy potential

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor stated that the state government is committed to intensifying its efforts in digitalisation in order to fully benefit from the digital economy. Speaking at the Sabah Chinese Economic Conference on August 23, Hajiji emphasized the importance of technology and innovation in driving productivity and growth. He acknowledged that businesses in various sectors are leveraging technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI) to stay relevant and competitive. Hajiji highlighted that the digital economy is projected to contribute 22.6% of Malaysia’s GDP and generate half a million jobs by 2025.

In his speech, which was read by state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, Hajiji expressed support for the conference’s focus on using new technology to enhance Sabah’s economic competitiveness. He commended the exploration of AI and drones as tools for economic development. Additionally, he mentioned that the state’s economic development authority, Sedia, had organized a Drone Seminar to further investigate the potential of drones in revolutionizing Sabah’s economy. Hajiji emphasized the need for creativity and proactivity in fully leveraging digital technologies and virtual reality to remain competitive.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister underscored the significance of empowering human capital to be competent, innovative, resilient, and uphold integrity. Initiatives to achieve this goal include offering Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) courses aligned with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and expanding the Internet of Things (IoT). Hajiji stressed the need to enhance collaboration between the industry and the government on skills training to improve the marketability and capacity of Sabah’s human capital.
