KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Tourism Board (STB) is seeking collaboration with the Economy Ministry to comprehensively develop rural tourism in Sabah. STB chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai emphasized the importance of working with the federal ministry to empower rural communities economically and alleviate poverty. This statement was made following Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib’s visit to the Tagal Eco-Tourism initiative in Kampung Poturidong, Kiulu in Tuaran to witness firsthand the potential of community-based tourism.
Bangkuai, who is also the Kiulu assemblyman, accompanied Hanifah and 30 participants attending the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Summit held in Kota Kinabalu. During her discussion with Bangkuai, Hanifah noted the potential of the tagal system as a significant tourist attraction. The tagal system is a conservation practice by indigenous communities that involves temporarily prohibiting fishing in rivers to restore fisheries, maintain river cleanliness, and generate income for local communities.
Hanifah highlighted the need for Sabah to capitalize on its unique attractions, such as the tagal system, unspoiled natural beauty, and picturesque rivers. Recognizing the importance of rural tourism, the Deputy Minister agreed on the need to improve basic amenities for visitor convenience. Her Ministry would explore how it could contribute to further developing rural tourism in Sabah.
Bangkuai expressed hope that the Sabah Tourism Board would have the opportunity to present its comprehensive rural tourism plans to the Ministry and align their strategies for maximum impact. He emphasized the focus on fostering sustainable practices and creating a win-win situation by promoting responsible tourism while improving the state’s socio-economic landscape.
