KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the situation in Lebanon following recent attacks in Beirut, with the safety and welfare of Malaysians residing there being a top priority.

In a statement on Monday (Sept 23), Wisma Putra confirmed that the Malaysian embassy in Beirut is in communication with Malaysians in the country. According to embassy records, 23 Malaysians are currently registered and all have been reported safe.

“The ministry, through the embassy, is actively monitoring developments in Lebanon, particularly after the attacks in Beirut and increased cross-border clashes in southern Lebanon. As a precaution, we advise Malaysians in Lebanon to stay vigilant and prioritise their safety. They may also consider relocating to safer areas or returning to Malaysia if they feel threatened,” the statement read.

Malaysians are also advised to postpone any non-essential travel to Lebanon due to the volatile situation.

The ministry further noted that the embassy remains in constant contact with the Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) 850-11, serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unfil), to ensure the safety of Malaysian peacekeepers.

“All Malbatt personnel deployments and assignments in Lebanon will continue to be coordinated by Unfil,” the ministry added.

For consular assistance, Malaysians in Lebanon can contact the Malaysian embassy in Beirut at Lot 170, Saad Zaghloul Street, Downtown, Beirut.

The embassy can be reached at +961 7677 2527 or +961 7138 0063, or via email at [email protected]. – Bernama
