The candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-election, Nazri Abdul Rahman, revealed that the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub wanted him to serve the constituents like family. Nazri stated that Salahuddin’s final advice was for him to always be by the side of the people in difficult times and share in their happiness. These words have deeply resonated with Nazri. Salahuddin passed away on July 23 and left the constituency without a representative since 2018.
Nazri shared that despite never considering contesting the seat, Salahuddin’s advice has strengthened his determination to champion the fate of the constituents and continue Salahuddin’s legacy. As an engineer with the Muar Municipal Council for 30 years, Nazri has been more comfortable working behind the scenes to resolve the issues faced by the people. However, he believes being a people’s representative is a responsibility he cannot neglect.
Initially reluctant to accept the candidacy, Nazri felt obligated to serve the Simpang Jeram people in honor of Salahuddin’s request. Though he prefers working behind the scenes, he agreed to take on the responsibility, albeit with a heavy heart. Nazri emphasized Salahuddin’s dedication to the people and recalled accompanying him at night to listen to their opinions. He praised Salahuddin’s commitment to finding the best way to help the people in Simpang Jeram.
Nazri mentioned that the Menu Rahmah idea, aimed at ensuring there is food on the table for the people, was initiated during their late-night discussions. He acknowledged the immense responsibility and aspires to emulate Salahuddin in serving the people to the best of his ability, continuing Salahuddin’s legacy and spirit.
In the upcoming three-cornered battle in the Sept 9 by-election, Nazri will face challenges from PAS central committee member Dr. Mohd Mazri Yahya representing Perikatan Nasional, and an independent candidate, S Jeganathan. The fight for the seat will be critical for all candidates involved.
