A police officer tragically lost his life when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a drain in the Sandakan east coast district early Saturday (July 22).
The deceased officer, identified as Insp Mohamad Ikhlas Rosmi, 30 years old, was assigned to the Sandakan Marine Police Force. The accident occurred at Mile 4, Jalan Taman Indah Jaya, during the early hours of the morning. It is believed that Insp Mohamad Ikhlas Rosmi was on his way home from the city centre when the incident took place, sometime after 4am.
The Fire and Rescue Department were alerted at 4.25am and responded promptly. A spokesperson for the department stated that the victim was trapped inside the car, but firefighters managed to extract him from the vehicle. Tragically, the medical team from the Health Ministry confirmed that Insp Mohamad Ikhlas Rosmi had already passed away at the accident site.
The Sandakan Police Chief, Asst Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek, confirmed the incident and explained that the officer had lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into the drain. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, and the case is being looked into under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
