KUALA LUMPUR: Caretaker Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor denies claims by the police that he was unreachable prior to his arrest at a hotel in Mont Kiara here early on Tuesday (July 18).
Muhammad Sanusi says he was in contact via text messages with the police between 10pm on Monday (July 17) and 2am on Tuesday and has the WhatsApp messages as proof.
He adds that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain’s claim at a press conference on Tuesday stating that he was arrested because he was not contactable is inaccurate.
“Respectfully, the IGP’s claims are not true. I was in communication with the police to avoid being arrested.
“I informed them that I would be present in court. They intended to arrest me, especially in public to create the perception that an offense had occurred,” he tells reporters at a gathering on Wednesday (July 19) alongside the Kedah Sultan.
According to Muhammad Sanusi, he never received any court notice from the police but learned that it was registered online after working hours on Monday.
“Rarely do people file a case after working hours. I only found out from a news portal after 6pm that I would be taken to court,” he says.
However, he states that while attending meetings, he and his officer received a call from an individual who claimed to be a police officer from Bukit Aman.
“I have screenshots of this. Don’t play games with me, I have printed them all out. I have forwarded all the screenshots to a senior officer in Bukit Aman.”
“The police told me that they wanted to take my statement. I asked if they planned to arrest me. I made it clear that I did not want to be arrested because I am a law-abiding citizen who has cooperated with the police. I have never attempted to flee,” he explains.
The Jeneri assemblyman recounts that the police informed him to be present at the Sri Hartamas police station near the hotel, but he refused to do so if they intended to arrest him.
Lastly, Sanusi states that he was ultimately arrested at 2.30am by a police team at the hotel where he was staying.
He acknowledges the professionalism and politeness of the police personnel involved.
“They allowed me to shower, brush my teeth, and have a drink. I don’t blame them, they were just following orders. However, their large presence frightened people at the hotel,” he acknowledges.
He explains that he was taken to the Gombak police station, where he was held in a meeting room and had his statement recorded for another case related to his comments on the podcast Keluar Sekejap, hosted by former Umno leaders Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Sufian Hamdan.
