PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has expressed his willingness to rebuild his friendship with Umno, signaling a potential reconciliation.
During a recent appearance on Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Sufian Hamdan’s podcast, Keluar Sekejap, the Kedah Mentri Besar stated his openness to the idea of mending ties with his former ally.
Sanusi stated, “I still ask my friends who are Umno leaders not to attack us too much. We may become friends again in the future. I am still open to that possibility.”
He also expressed hope in reviving the Muafakat Nasional alliance.
Sanusi blamed Umno leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for the dissolution of Muafakat, a collaboration between Umno and PAS, alleging that Zahid Hamidi deliberately undermined the alliance to work with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Pakatan Harapan.
Sanusi emphasized that his remarks were not intended as enmity towards his former Umno allies who were part of the Muafakat alliance, explaining that they were obligated to follow their “boss’s” decisions.
He added that the core principle of Muafakat was the unity of the “ummah,” transcending party lines and welcoming anyone, including Bersatu, who wishes to unite with the community.
In the aftermath of their defeat in the 2018 General Election, Umno and PAS established the Muafakat Nasional charter to jointly combat their common adversary, Pakatan.
The charter, which was signed with great fanfare on September 14, 2019, by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Umno president Ahmad Zahid, marked the start of their partnership.
Prior to the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15), Umno presented three conditions to PAS for potential cooperation: PAS had to sever ties with Bersatu and leave the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
