SIBU: Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee stated that Sarawak will continue to use English as the medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics in schools. He emphasized that the state government will not revert to using Bahasa Malaysia for these subjects. Previously, Mathematics and Science were taught in English but were later changed to Bahasa Malaysia. It took the state four years to reintroduce English as the language of instruction for these subjects. Annuar, who is the Deputy Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Minister of the state, expressed determination to continue teaching Science and Mathematics in English. He made these remarks while opening the Postponement of Sarawak Zone KV Skills Competition at Sibu Vocational College on August 25.
Dr Annuar mentioned that Sarawak has been using English since the implementation of the Dual Language Programme in 2019. The state government has invested RM18 million in facilities, teacher training, and books to support the programme. Despite this, Dr Annuar did not provide any specific details regarding the impact or benefits of using English for teaching these subjects.
