KUCHING: Sarawak is aiming to become a key exporter of renewable energy, with a particular focus on hydrogen, by the end of 2027, according to Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier stated that the state is collaborating with industry players like Gentari Sdn Bhd, as well as investors from Japan and Korea, to assess the potential for hydrogen development in Sarawak.

“By 2027, the necessary infrastructure will be in place, and we will have a plant dedicated to producing hydrogen,” he remarked.

“We have already secured buyers from Korea and Japan. If we ramp up our production, we could even consider exporting to other countries,” he added.

“I envision a future where Sarawak becomes a primary supplier of green energy for the entire region,” he informed reporters at the Borneo Energy Transition Conference in Kuching on Monday (Feb 26).

During his address, Abang Johari revealed Sarawak’s plans to establish a hydrogen hub in collaboration with Gentari.

He explained that this hub would serve as the main supplier of green hydrogen for downstream facilities within the state.

“The concept of this hydrogen hub involves both upstream, or hydrogen production, and downstream hydrogen derivatives, showcasing its ability to accommodate multiple investors,” he elaborated.

Abang Johari also highlighted that the hub would be overseen and run by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE), a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, along with Gentari’s subsidiary Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd.

“I hope this partnership among the stakeholders will convey our commitment to generating clean energy for the global market,” he emphasized.

At the conference, Abang Johari presided over the exchange of agreements between Gentari Hydrogen and SEDCE for the joint establishment of a centralized hydrogen production hub in Bintulu, to be named the Sarawak H2 Hub.

SEDCE also formalized agreements with Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical, and Korea National Oil Corporation, as well as an initiative with Sarawak Metro, to develop the Rembus hydrogen plant in support of the Kuching urban transportation system project.
