SIBU: Preparations by Sarawak police for the monsoon season received a boost with the contribution of two inflatable rescue boats from Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The boats, costing a total of RM33,800, include two outboard engines and trailers.

Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman, said another three similar boats would arrive later as currently they are out of stock.

He also pledged to contribute RM105,000 for the installation of 50 solar street lights at the Sibu police headquarters compound.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said the boats would be utilised by the police during flood operations throughout the state.

“Initially, we planned to provide five boats. However, we can only deliver two for now,” he said at a presentation ceremony on Friday (Aug 18).

Tiong commended Sibu police for maintaining peace and security in the town.

“Previously, there were cases (gangsterism) every day, but the situation has improved. People can now live in peace and harmony, thanks to the Sibu police for helping to beef up security.

“I urge the police to continue their commendable work in ensuring public safety here,” he said.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said they would distribute the boats to district police headquarters that needed the asset the most.

“The boats and engines will be registered as capital assets and become government properties. We will utilise these assets during the northeast monsoon season to enable us to deliver assistance efficiently to the people,” he said.
