Sarawak Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar will inform the Election Commission (EC) about the vacant N67 Jepak state seat after the incumbent, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, passed away.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Idris Buang stated that according to the Sarawak Constitution, it is the Speaker’s responsibility to notify the EC about the vacancy.

“The Speaker will inform the EC so that they can issue an order or writ for a by-election, as there are still three years remaining in the current term,” he said on Friday (Sept 15).

According to the state constitution, a by-election must be held within 60 days from the date the seat is declared vacant, Buang informed reporters while paying his final respects to the late Talib at the Normah Medical Centre on Friday night.

Talib, aged 72, passed away at 5.50pm on Friday due to kidney complications after being admitted to the medical centre on Thursday (Sept 15).

Talib, who formerly served as a minister in the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman), had been the Jepak assemblyman for six terms since 1996. – Bernama
