Sarawak’s head of state, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has officially given a name to the state flag, calling it Ibu Pertiwi. He stated that while the national flag is known as Jalur Gemilang, the state flag had remained unnamed until now.
The Premier explained that Ibu Pertiwi, meaning ‘our motherland’, signifies the people’s commitment to safeguarding the territory and working towards its advancement. He emphasized the significance of the name, which symbolizes Sarawak’s independence and unity.
During the new year countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront, Abang Johari unveiled the tallest flagpole in the country, situated near the Sarawak Legislative Assembly. He also announced that the square surrounding the 99m-tall structure would be named Dataran Ibu Pertiwi.
Abang Johari also disclosed that three companies, namely Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), PETRONAS, and Shell, contributed to the cost of the flagpole. He emphasized that the funding for the flagpole did not come from the government, as the three oil companies contributed under their corporate social responsibility.
Looking forward to 2024, Abang Johari expressed confidence in continuing the state’s success from the previous year. He highlighted that the state’s revenue had reached a record RM13.1bil in 2023, enabling the government to invest in development, educational support, and other forms of assistance for the people.
He also mentioned plans to take over key organizations in 2024, which he promised to announce at the appropriate time. The new year countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront featured cultural performances, concerts, a boat parade, and a fireworks display.
