KUCHING: Sarawak has successfully bid to host the World Water Congress and Exhibition in 2028, announced Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg (pic).
The state’s Premier considers this a significant milestone, especially as it coincides with the 60th Malaysia Day celebration.
“Sarawak has made history for Malaysia and Asean as Kuching has been selected to host the congress. Approximately 10,000 participants from 80 countries are expected to attend,” he stated during the national-level Malaysia Day celebration on Saturday (Sept 16) night.
The congress will take place at the expanded Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, with the aim of generating economic outcomes to promote regional collaboration within Asean.
“Additionally, it will establish Sarawak as a hub for sustainability and innovation in the global water industry. Therefore, Kuching will gain worldwide recognition,” he added.
In a separate statement, Abang Johari expressed the state government’s gratitude towards the Federal Government for recognizing and restoring Sarawak and Sabah’s rights as outlined in the Federal Constitution and Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“Although Sarawak might be accused of being parochial in our demands, our intention is solely to secure Sarawak’s rights without infringing on the rights of others,” he clarified.
He further pledged full support from the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government to ensure stability until the next election, emphasizing that demands made under MA63 by Sarawak and Sabah do not hinder the collaboration with Peninsular Malaysia to strengthen unity.
