Dion Das Louis, a pint-size dancer from Sarawak who is affectionately known as the “Little Bornean Birdie,” is gearing up to showcase his talent on a global platform in July. The eight-year-old will be representing Malaysia at the 27th World Championships of Performing Arts in the United States.
His father, Louis Lansam, shared that Dion will be traveling to Long Beach, California at the end of June for the competition, which is scheduled to take place from July 1 to 5. Dion’s spot in the world championships was secured after he emerged victorious in the junior dance category at the Malaysia Championships of Performing Arts in Kuala Lumpur on January 27.
Dion’s performance at the competition featured a contemporary ethnic dance where he embodied the character of a bird, which led to his endearing moniker. Louis explained that Dion’s interpretation of the traditional Iban ngajat dance drew inspiration from two majestic Borneo birds, the ruai or great argus pheasant, and the kenyalang or hornbill.
“The birds are elegantly portrayed in the feathers of his traditional costume,” Louis remarked. “His dance movements are carefully choreographed to emulate the kenyalang’s flight through the treetops and the ruai’s display of its vibrant plumage.”
Accompanying Dion on a visit to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah on March 13 were his mother, Edina Lanying, and Louis. Edina shared that Dion, a Year Two student at SK Green Road, possesses a natural flair for performing the ngajat.
“I believe he inherited this talent from his maternal grandfather, a skilled ngajat dancer from Nanga Entabai in Pakan,” Edina disclosed, emphasizing that Dion is frequently invited to showcase his skills at various events.
Both Louis and Edina will be supporting their son as he competes at the world championships. Uggah expressed his delight at the news of Dion’s participation in the prestigious event, likening it to the Olympics of performing arts.
“It brings us great joy to see a young talent from our community earning a spot on the global stage,” Uggah remarked, commending Dion for his accomplishments.
