SIBU: The Sarawak National Day celebration to be held here will be a showcase of patriotism and national unity.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said the theme “Soul of Independence” has deep meaning as it reminds the people of the importance of fostering the spirit of independence in every aspect of life.

“Let us all, with full pride and responsibility, continue to strive to contribute to national development and maintain the harmony that we have built.

“With the unity spirit and hard work, nothing is impossible for us to achieve,” he said on Thursday (August 8).

Speaking at a press conference, Tayai said the event is not only to celebrate past achievements but also to build a more glorious and prosperous future.

Tayai, who is the minister in charge of the celebration, also called on business owners and residents to fly the Jalur Gemilang and the Sarawak flag.

Three main activities are planned for the celebration.

A colourful fireworks display and stage show featuring artistes such as Baby Shima will take place at the town square at 8pm on August 30.

On Aug 31, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will join more than 5,000 people for a 2.4km Fun Walk, starting from the town square at 5.30am.

Starting at 11am on Aug 31 is the National Day Assembly at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak.

The event will be attended by Wan Junaidi and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Abang Johari and his wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Sarawak Cabinet members and other dignitaries.
