KUCHING: Sarawak has set a new record with the launch of its 99m tall flagpole, which has been recognized as the tallest in Malaysia and Southeast Asia by the Malaysia Book of Records. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was presented with the record certificate during a walkabout at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, where the flagpole is located.
During the walkabout, Abang Johari stated, “This is an iconic project for Kuching and Sarawak. Tourists can visit the square, which is in a strategic and historic location near Fort Margherita and the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.”
The RM30mil flagpole was officially launched during the New Year countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront on Dec 31. Abang Johari disclosed that the project was financed by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), PETRONAS, and Shell to reflect the development of the oil and gas industry in the state.
He also mentioned that the flagpole is a part of the state’s tourism infrastructure, featuring amenities such as an English tea house. “It will have an impact as a place where visitors can take photos and learn about Sarawak’s economic development and history,” he said.
When asked about the flagpole’s height, Abang Johari explained that it was inspired by the nine-pillar design of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly building and the nine-pointed star on the state flag. He added, “If you include the foundation of the flagpole, the total height would come to 101m.”
