The Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to facilitate the smooth transition of MASwings Sdn Bhd, according to State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin. The decision was made during a meeting between the two parties at the MAB Academy in Petaling Jaya on July 24. Lee stated that the comprehensive MOU will enable both parties to engage in detailed discussions, establish clear parameters, define scopes, set timelines, and create a streamlined process for the acquisition of MASwings. The objective of the meeting, led by the Sarawak delegation, was to initiate discussions regarding the acquisition of MASwings by the state government. This meeting follows a previous meeting on July 7 with MAG’s main shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, as well as the signing of an MOU on July 20 for the acquisition of rural air services (RAS) between the state and federal governments. Both parties agreed during the meeting to ensure a seamless acquisition process without disrupting the operation of RAS. Lee added that the MOU signed on July 20 provides assurance from the Federal Government that it will continue subsidizing RAS and promoting socioeconomic activities in rural areas. The Sarawak delegation consisted of State Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, State Attorney General Datuk Seri Talat Mahmood, Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, and State Economic Planning Unit Director Lester Matthew. MAG was represented by Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Izham Ismail, Group Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Bryan Foong, MASwings Chief Operating Officer Suresh Singam, and other senior officers.
