A man from Sarikei has become a victim of an international job scam syndicate in Myanmar, according to Sarikei OCPD Supt Awang Arfian Awang Bujang. The victim’s sister, a 34-year-old woman, lodged a report on September 21st stating that her brother, along with several other Malaysians, had been tricked by job offers and were now being mistreated by their employers in Myanmar.
Supt Arfian explained that initial investigations revealed the victim’s younger brother was enticed by a job offer promising a good salary via a social media platform. However, the victim was deceived and taken to Myanmar by an agent who had offered him a monthly salary of RM3,000. The victims were then exploited as scammers, and if they failed to meet their targets, they would face fines, abuse, and the forceful consumption of non-halal food.
The victim informed his sister that his MyKad and passport had been confiscated by his employer, preventing him from escaping the situation. Feeling concerned for her brother’s safety, the sister filed a police report and requested assistance from the relevant authorities to bring him back to Malaysia, Supt Arfian added.
In order to bring the victim back home, Supt Arfian stated that the police would seek cooperation from Bukit Aman, Interpol, and the Malaysian Embassy in Myanmar.
