SEPANG: The state of Selangor in Malaysia plans to designate satay as its heritage food, aiming to elevate the popular dish to a new level of recognition.

Borhan Aman Shah, Chairman of Selangor State Heritage and Malay Customs Corporation, stated that a proposal on this matter will be submitted to the state executive council later this year. He mentioned that although satay is sold throughout the country, it is most renowned in Kajang, which is situated in Selangor.

He anticipated that the proposal will be approved by early 2024. Borhan made this announcement during the launch of Fiesta Sate Selangor at Avani Sepang Goldcoast Resort in Bagan Lalang.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the chief minister of Selangor, is expected to announce the official designation of satay as the state’s heritage food.

The satay festival at Pantai Bagan Lalang attracted countless individuals who came to indulge in the dish while enjoying the coastal scenery.

Around midday, approximately 11,000 visitors arrived, and from 9am to 3pm, over 100,000 pieces of satay were served by 20 satay vendors. This event is set to be recorded in the Malaysia Book of Records, as mentioned by State Rural Development, Unity, and Consumers Committee Chairman Datuk Rizam Ismail.

Rizam expressed that the event surpassed a similar occasion held in 2015, during which 50,000 pieces of satay were served. He believes that this fiesta, held in conjunction with Malaysia Day, demonstrates the racial diversity and unity in Selangor.

Visitors from various backgrounds flocked to the event to savor their favorite dish and foster a sense of togetherness through food, in line with the state government’s efforts. The event even attracted people from neighboring states, such as Bachik Husin, a resident of Sepang, who brought his family to the festival after learning about it through their neighborhood chat group. Similarly, Anbalagan Anandan from Nilai, Negri Sembilan, traveled with his family to participate and suggested that more events like this be organized to promote Selangor’s leisure destinations.

Chelsea Ng, who discovered the fiesta through word of mouth, attended the event with her friend and likened its atmosphere to a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house, finding it quite festive and enjoyable.

According to Muhammad Rafizan Yusoff, a marketing executive from Sate Kajang Haji Samuri, this event provided smaller vendors with an excellent platform to expand their market and allowed visitors to sample satay from different places in one location.
