TNB, the national electricity provider, has been supplying electricity to the country for over 70 years. While they generate income from electricity, they also encourage consumers to be more energy efficient. This may seem contradictory, but TNB believes that energy efficiency is beneficial for the long-term health of the energy sector and cost-effective for consumers. It is more economical for TNB to promote energy conservation rather than build new power plants to meet increasing demand.
If more energy is used, TNB would need to invest in building new power plants, which is costly and would affect users as well. Inefficient use of electricity also impacts the entire power generation value chain and electricity tariffs. Therefore, TNB has launched an educational program to educate consumers on the importance of energy efficiency, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, pollutants, and utility bills.
In partnership with Star Media Group (SMG), TNB has initiated an awareness campaign on energy safety and energy efficiency tips. They aim to nurture future climate change activists with leadership qualities and self-confidence. The program called “Powering The Future” is conducted in primary and secondary schools, creating an engaging learning atmosphere for students to better understand their role in maintaining a sustainable future.
The workshop series includes fun simulation activities and games and is being conducted at 10 selected urban and sub-urban schools in the Klang Valley. The primary school event launch took place at SK Yaacob Latiff in Kuala Lumpur with TNB and SMG representatives. The goal of the workshop is to increase students’ awareness of renewable energy and foster sustainable change. TNB believes in starting energy efficiency education at a young age.
TNB has observed that children absorb knowledge better and are eager to practice energy efficient habits. They often share this knowledge with their parents, who may not be aware of best practices, encouraging them to adopt energy efficient lifestyles. The workshops also aim to inspire younger generations and communities to strive for a more sustainable future.
Through this program, TNB hopes to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and similar compounds to combat global warming and create a better future for the children. The Powering The Future program is part of the Malaysia Energy Literacy Program (MELP), launched by the Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister in March 2023.
