PETALING JAYA: The #SaySomethingNice campaign, which is held to coincide with the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, is set to receive support from the unity government after a three-year break. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced plans to raise awareness of the campaign through Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and to involve politicians from both sides of the political spectrum.
As the chairman of the National Unity Advisory Council, Fadillah Yusof intends to propose to Members of Parliament and state-elected assemblymen that they participate in the campaign. He emphasized the importance of unity for the development and prosperity of the nation, and expressed the hope that this campaign would remind leaders of their responsibility to unite the people.
Fadillah Yusof believes that the current political situation in Malaysia is causing further division among the nation’s multi-ethnic and religious society. He stated that the #SaySomethingNice campaign is necessary to encourage individuals from various levels of society, including political and business leaders, to promote unity among the people. The deputy prime minister plans to bring up this campaign during the Cabinet meeting on August 30.
During his speech at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, Fadillah Yusof also mentioned his intention to propose to the Cabinet that RTM provide coverage of the campaign in order to increase awareness among the public.
The #SaySomethingNice campaign was first introduced by Zubedy Sdn Bhd in 2011, in partnership with several non-governmental organizations and private sector entities. The campaign, themed ‘Coalition of the Measured’, aims to capture moments of unity among Malaysians during the month-long Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations from August 31 to September 16.
According to Anas Zubedy, the managing director of Zubedy Sdn Bhd, the chosen theme of the campaign reflects the current political climate in Malaysia. He expressed concern over the tendency of political figures to use extreme tactics to divide their opponents and their supporters. The campaign seeks to counter this trend by encouraging Malaysians to express their opinions in a more measured and respectful manner.
