Students and teachers at a secondary school in Ulu Tiram used their imagination for their sports day, creating mini petrol kiosks, a replica of the Petronas Twin Towers, and even a robot costume that transformed into a truck. The theme of the event was “petrol stations,” with each sports house choosing a petrol station. The school has six sports houses: purple, orange, red, blue, green, and yellow.
According to disciplinary teacher Afif Ali, the teachers and students discussed ideas and gathered materials to bring them to life. The students devoted their time in between classes and after school to work on their projects, which included decorating their tents with balloons and building replicas of roads, petrol stations, and stores. One student even showed up in an inflatable tube man costume like the ones seen at petrol stations.
Afif created a video clip of the event to document the students’ efforts, which unexpectedly went viral with over 1.7 million views. Many people commended the students for their creativity, and some even suggested approaching petrol companies for sponsorship. The Red House emerged as the winner of the sports day.
Apart from having fun, the programme taught students the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and setting realistic goals. They learned that it was easy to come up with ideas, but turning them into reality required time and effort. Afif, who is a design and technology teacher, mentioned that the programme was a valuable learning experience for the students.
With a young and dynamic teaching staff of 121 teachers, the school plans to come up with more fun and innovative themes in the future to keep the students interested.
