The Education Ministry is currently investigating an incident that occurred at a school in Kajang, where some students were reportedly disciplined for wearing traditional attire during a National Day event, according to an officer from the Deputy Education Minister’s office. The Selangor Education Department is currently looking into the alleged incident and will issue a statement once the investigation is completed, the officer confirmed on Wednesday (Sept 20).
According to a news portal, students from the secondary school were prohibited from wearing sarees at an event that aimed to promote unity. Furthermore, a student claimed that those who wore sarees were required to provide their names to the discipline teacher, who would then record them in the “Sistem Sahsiah Diri Murid” (personal student record or SSDM). Concerned parents of the affected students are worried that this disciplinary mark in the record may have negative consequences on their children’s future. They are currently seeking an explanation from the school authorities.
In addition, the student also stated that Indian students had previously been instructed to remove their mauli or kavala (holy thread) and were only allowed to wear it if they obtained permission. Traditionally, the red-colored thread is worn on the right wrist for males and the left wrist for females.
